The author also relates some of his experiences as a pseudo counter-terrorist operator in the elite Selous Scouts during the Rhodesian Bush War, and covers many of his experiences as a professional hunter in the exciting world of African Safari.
Having also served in the previous South African era ‘black homeland’ of Ciskei he offers an often-humorous insight into life during the wayward period.
This exciting book of adventure ends with a look into what it is like to work in war-torn Iraq in the specialised field of Security Escort Teams.
About the Author
Kevin Thomas was born in British colonial Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) in 1950. In 1967 at age 17 he joined the Rhodesian Department of National Parks & Wildlife Management as a cadet game ranger and thereafter served as a game ranger for six years, three of which were in the remote Zambezi Valley.
During this time he met and married Brenda and after resigning from the department they ventured into a short lived safari operation, thwarted by the escalating Rhodesian Bush War, forcing the business into closure. He then joined the regular Rhodesian Army as a Special Forces soldier and one of the founder members of the Selous Scouts, a formidable counter-insurgency unit.
After five years regular Special Forces service he departed the army in mid-1979 and once more turned to professional hunting & safari in Southern Africa. In January 2004 he joined Erinys Iraq where he served for two years as a Security Escort Team project lead, before returning to a professional hunting career in April 2006.
An accomplished hunting writer Kevin also writes regularly for various outdoor magazines such as Magnum in South Africa & Sporting Rifle in the UK, he has written a second book Tracking the Memory.

Kevin Thomas is a man to be admired. Great life story. When I was a kid, I got some very valuable advice, "live your life like it was a story, you can make it an exciting read or you can make it boring. the choice is yours." He obviously went with the later.Not trying to be over the top with my review, but Mr. Thomas really did help me out of a dull spot in my life. I served in the U.S. Marines, was a contractor in Iraq (among others), avid sportsman, and participated in my second safari last year. Lately, to be honest, I have just been bored with the daily grind. Thanks for filling that gap with your story and reminding me that there are other folks out there that didn't just sit in a cubicle all day, they went out and made the most out of their lives.

Incredibly interesting story.
An interesting and engaging account of the author's life as a game ranger in Rhodesia, his involvement in the Bush War with the Selous Scouts and his subsequent time in South Africa working as a game ranger and safari guide in the then Bantu homelands.
I enjoyed this book immensely. I know several people who lived in Rhodesia at that time, and have heard accounts of that conflict from them, one even got a mention in the book. Told in a "matter of fact" manner, like the author was in the room giving his version.
An exciting read from start to finish. Highly recommended.
It is a fairly long book with a lot of detail. The author covers quite a long span of time and tries to do so in a reasonable manner. I would not buy this book exclusively for its Rhodesian military content because that is only part of the story. All in all if you are interested in both military stories and hunting stories it is a pleasant read albeit kind of a long read at times.
For the hunter, soldier or student of Africa, particularly the Southern Cone, this is a fine book. Written by a man who has Africa in his blood and bones, and whose family has lived and served in that part of the continent for five generations. He hasn't just experienced Africa as a travel writer might, he's lived Africa his entire life and knows his turf as only a native can. Perhaps this isn't a great book in the sense that an important novel might be, but it's an important book in that it captures a cross-sectional slice of Southern Africa at a critical transition point in recent history. It's Kevin's misfortune to live at the end of an era where the white man may no longer have a seminal role to play. For men like Kevin and his wife Brenda, this seems a singular tragedy and a colossal waste of talent and training, but we'll have this book to remind us of what the times were like and the kind of men that once found full expression in the wild wastes of Africa. I know I'll always have my copy.
