Martin, a refugee from Zimbabwe, finds himself homeless on the streets of Johannesburg, where he discovers that survival is team work. He is befriended by Sister Louisa, an Irish nun, who takes him with her to England. Martin never forgets his friends on the streets and the events that shaped him. When a little African girl named Rachel goes missing in London, he becomes suspicious. Along with his friend Jenny, also a refugee from Zimbabwe, Martin rescues Rachel and tracks down the gang of human smugglers that kidnapped her. This interracial novel points out the troubles faced by refugees as well as the evils of human trafficking, which both displace people from their culture. The Refugees and the Rescue offers a touching tribute to all those forced out of their homes around the world. Author Annabelle Lewis is now working on a sequel. She was born and grew up in England. After receiving her master's degree in education, she went to Africa where she lived and worked for many years. Lewis now splits her time between Manchester and Lincolnshire, and visits South Africa frequently. She supports a number of children's charities there and has written and published several stories and teachers' guides for use in Central and Southern African schools. The author also just released a book set in South Africa, titled Rainbow. Publisher's website www.strategicbookpublishing.com/TheRefugeesAndTheRescue.html

Now this is a well written book. It is geared toward young adults, even pre-teens but as any book of that genre, if it is well written, it will appeal to adults too and it does.It almost reminds me of the movie Crash (Widescreen Edition). You have Martin and Jenny, who couldn't be more different. Both are from South Africa, and they both leave the country for completely their own unique reasons. They follow their own paths until fate causes these paths to cross.
This is great exposure to interracial issues and cultural divide. It is also a great example of loyalty and perseverance across said racial lines. I hope some schools start making it required reading. It's not only interesting, but it's eye-opening.

The Refugees and the Rescue Annabelle Lewis 9781608607044 Books Reviews
The best part of reading a great book is that it lets you safely explore other peoples' lives and cultures. The Refugees and the Rescue, by Annabelle Lewis, is one such book. While geared towards the teenage and preteen set, this book is so well written that an adult can enjoy it too. It is written from the viewpoint of its young hero and heroine, two children who come from the opposite end of the culture divide. Martin, a whip-smart black street boy, originally from Zimbabwe, and Jenny, a lovely, white South African girl from a wealthy landowning family, we learn of the vast differences of life in South Africa. The two leave Africa under vastly different circumstances, yet end up in the same small village in England where they become friends.
To say more would give away the great adventure the two kids have, both using skills they have learned from their very different backgrounds. Lewis shows us that in the end, these two kids have far more in common than their outward appearances would suggest. The Refugees and the Rescue is a multi-layered adventure that teaches as much as it entertains, and I would highly recommend it for young adult readers. The lessons of loyalty, perseverance and doing the right thing shine in this book, blanketed under a layer of high adventure that capture the reader's attention and keep it until the exciting ending of the book.
